King-Tears Mortuary, Inc. is a long-serving Austin, TX business, situated a mile from downtown. With the funeral home's convenient location comes several cemeteries within a 1/2-mile radius, including Texas State Cemetery, City Cemetery and Oakwood Cemetery.
This mortuary business was founded in 1901 and is thought to be the first African American-owned funeral home in Texas. The original location was on 6th street; however King-Tears Mortuary, Inc. moved to its 12th Street location in 1934. Clients enjoy a prominent corner location, chapels that can accommodate up to 125 guests and convenient overflow area for larger funeral services.
Since its opening, King-Tears Mortuary, Inc. has been a family business. The funeral home passed through the Tears family until 1955, and then after the original owner's son, Milton Tears, retired, the business was sold to the King family. Now, the tradition of family and servitude continues through the Kings.
The staff at King-Tears Mortuary, Inc. strive to provide individualized funeral services, burials and cremation memorials to the African American community. Direct cremations and pre-planning services are available as well.
