Mrs. J.W. Jones Memorial Chapel at 703 North Tenth Street has served north-west Kansas City's African-American community and wider metropolitan area for more than 100 years. The funeral home is within 30 miles of two cemeteries.
The imposing mansion-like building contains a lovely chapel seating approximately 200 guests. A well-appointed family lounge and visitation area can accommodate all types of funeral gatherings, contemporary celebrations of a loved one's life or traditional memorial services.
Today owned and operated by licensed funeral director and CEO, Ellsworth H. Crosby, Jr., the funeral home was founded by the late Mr. J. W. Jones as the Kansas City Embalming & Casket Company. Originally located at 440 State Avenue, the funeral home was run by his wife, Mrs. Mary A. Jones, after her husband's death. Upon her own death in 1963, the business passed to two long-serving employees.
In 1973, the funeral home moved to its current location and was permanently renamed the Mrs. J. W. Jones Memorial Chapel. The current staff are long-serving employees of the descendants of Mrs. Mary A. Jones' heirs. Funeral service options include direct cremation, cremation with memorial services and traditional burial.

“ This funeral parlor received my late uncles body from Hospice of Overland park under the direction of Deborah K. LOCKE without the proper true family's knowledge. Mary set theses arrangements with out the proper families knowledge. Charles SMITH body was embalmed and my grandmother sign after the fact!!! Deborah presented the director with my uncles id and military credentials along with his life policy with New York Life that did not list Deborah as the benefactor! Do you care to tell me how you all were going to act if we had not shown up! We see that 15 death certs ere ordered why? we only received 4 but paid $150 dollars where are the remaining death certificates? I WANT THSE COPIES NOW!!! ”
